The Internet and digital technologies enable individuals to more fully exercise their human rights, participate in the economy, and access critical services such as healthcare and emergency services. However, according to the Freedom House 2023 Freedom on the Net report, global Internet freedom has declined for the twelfth consecutive year and the misuse of technologies to curb human rights and fundamental freedoms is rising. To help address these challenges, this GCTF will explore the value of promoting Internet Freedom, advancing norms and safeguards for artificial intelligence (AI), countering the misuse of technology, and strengthening digital inclusion. This timely training can provide a rare platform for an estimated 30 government officials from approximately 15 countries in the Indo-Pacific to discuss the economic, social, and political dimensions of Internet freedom with the private sector, civil society, and academia. This training can serve as a catalyst for key government officials to influence positive change in the region through increased awareness, relationship development, and capacity-building, while also helping to expand Taiwan’s international outreach.
